वर्णमालेंतील बारावें व्यंजन , ट मध्यें महाप्राण मिळविल्यानें हें अक्षर बनतें . अक्षरविकास :- याच्या तीन अवस्था असून पहिली दिल्ली येथील शिवालिक स्तंभावरील शिलालेखांत दुसरी व तिसरी उज्जयिनी येथील लेखांत ( ११ वें शतक ) आढळते . १० व्या शतकापर्यंत ठ नुसता वर्तुळाकृति होता .

ठः [ṭhḥ]   1 An imitative sound, as of a metallic jar rolling down steps; रामाभिषेके मदविह्वलायाः कक्षा- च्च्युतो हेमघटस्तरुण्याः । सोपानमार्गे प्रकरोति शब्दं ठठं ठठं ठं ठठठं ठठं ठः Subhāṣ.
