n. एक देवर्षि । यह कश्यप ऋषि का मानसपुत्र [ब्रह्मांड ३.८.८६] । एवं नारद महर्षि का भतीजा था [म.स.४.१३,७.९,१०.२७];[ शां. ३०.२८] । महाभारत में अनेक स्थलों पर, यह एवं नारद का साथ साथ निर्देश प्राप्त है । इन दोनों को गंधर्व एवं देवर्षि माना जाता है । यह जनमेजय के सर्पसत्र का सदस्य था [म.आ.४८.८] । यह युधिष्ठिर की सभा में [म.स.४.१३], इंद्रसभा में [म.स.७९] । एवं कुबेरसभा में [म.स.१०.२६] विराजता था । यह शरशय्या पर पडे हुया भीष्म के दर्शन के लिये गया था [भा.१.९.६] । पांडवों के वनसाकाल में, यह उन्हें मिलने ‘काम्यकवन’ गया था, एवं शुद्धभाव से तीर्थयात्रा करने की आज्ञा उन्हे दी थी [म.व.९१.१७-२५] । एक बार सृंजय राजा की कन्या दमयंती से, नारद एवं यह दोनों एकसाथ प्रेम करने लगे । पश्चात् दमयंती एवं नारद का विवाह होने पर, इसने क्रुद्ध हो कर नारद को शाप दिया, ‘तुम वानरमुख बनोंगे’ [म.शां.३०.२४]; नारद देखिये । ब्रह्मसरोवर के तट से, अगस्त्य ऋषि के कमलों की चोरे होने पर, अन्य ऋषियों के साथ इसने भी शपथ खायी थी [म.अनु.१४३.३४] ।
